Sounds of Summer

Done did the sleeve for a new CD that's out today on Delay 68/Cherry Red - Magic Transistor Radio: 20 Good Vibrations recorded by Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys.

I tried to capture some of the mystical nightfall vibe of Brian's Mount Vernon & Fairway (A Fairy Tale), or the moogy shooting star atmospherics of Funky Pretty, as opposed to the more obvious California sun n' surf schtick.

It's a cute little compilation.. the material is quite eclectic (for its era), so it runs a bit like a mixtape, as if you had a friend who was trapped in the 1950's and could only communicate with you in the present via carefully compiled cassettes. Some Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers for ya here!

Unflinchingly honest and amusing sleevenotes from compiler Richard Anderson too.

Great stuff. Available now at Cherry Red, along with their usual mind-bendingly diverse selection of re-releases.

Could be worth grabbing Love, From Finland - The Love Records Anthology 1968-1976 while you're there too - featuring artists like Tasavallan Presidentti, and (not on the comp, but one for the sunshine nonetheless) Pekka Streng. The Jazzpuu reissues of that label were all top-notch. Roll the cinematic jazz prog fusion!
